What to Know, What to Expect, and What Makes The Oldershaw Clinic Different
Maybe you’ve been trying to conceive for longer than you expected, and each month brings that familiar mix of hope and heartache. Maybe your cycle has shifted and you can’t quite get a straight answer about why. Maybe you’ve been managing pain, exhaustion, or stress by pushing through, but you’re starting to wonder how long that’s sustainable.
And somewhere in there, you’ve felt rushed through appointments. Or dismissed. Or like you’ve had to connect all the dots yourself, alone.
We hear this from patients every single week. It’s part of why we do what we do.
This post walks you through what acupuncture really is, what it can help with, and what you can expect when you come see us.
What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a three-thousand-year-old medical practice built on a simple idea: your body functions best when everything flows freely.
In Chinese Medicine, the body’s meridians, channels that carry blood, oxygen, and nutrients, connect every organ, tissue, and cell in one continuous loop. When that loop flows the way it should, you feel well. When something blocks it, the body doesn’t get what it needs. That’s when illness, pain, fatigue, and imbalance take root.
Acupuncture works by placing very fine, sterile needles at specific points along these channels to restore that flow. The needles are so thin that most people are genuinely surprised: you’ll often feel almost nothing, or just a subtle warmth or gentle sensation as circulation begins to shift.
This isn’t just ancient philosophy, either. The circulatory concepts at the heart of Chinese Medicine map closely onto what Western medicine understands about blood flow, nerve pathways, and tissue health. That’s part of why acupuncture tends to work so well alongside conventional care. It’s not an alternative to Western medicine, it’s a complement to it.
What Can Acupuncture Help With?
Most people think of acupuncture for pain. And yes, it works beautifully for that. But the range of what it can support is much broader than most people realize.
Fertility and Reproductive Health
This is where our clinic has spent decades developing real expertise, and it’s what brings many of our patients to us from across the Bay Area. Fertility can be one of the most emotionally exhausting, physically demanding, and isolating things a person goes through, and we take that seriously.
Acupuncture supports fertility by improving blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, regulating hormonal cycles, and easing the toll that fertility treatment takes on your body and your nervous system. Whether you’re trying naturally, preparing for IVF or IUI, working through unexplained infertility, or focused on egg quality, acupuncture can be a meaningful part of your care.
Pregnancy
Growing a baby is hard work. From first-trimester nausea to back pain, anxiety, and sleeplessness later on, acupuncture offers safe, gentle, drug-free support at every stage of pregnancy, including help preparing your body for labor when the time comes.
Women’s Health
Irregular cycles, painful periods, PMS, PCOS, endometriosis, hormonal imbalance. These aren’t just things to push through. They’re your body trying to tell you something. Women’s health acupuncture works to address the underlying pattern, not just manage the symptoms, so you can start to feel like yourself again.
Perimenopause and Menopause
Hot flashes, insomnia, mood swings, brain fog, low energy. If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to white-knuckle your way through it. Acupuncture helps the body recalibrate as hormones shift, and for many women it offers real, meaningful relief.
Stress, Anxiety, and Sleep
When your nervous system is running on overdrive, everything suffers: your sleep, your digestion, your mood, your fertility. Acupuncture is one of the most effective ways to activate your body’s parasympathetic nervous system (the “rest and restore” mode your body desperately needs) and genuinely reset. Many patients tell us it’s the first time in months they’ve felt truly calm.
Pain
Back pain, neck pain, migraines, sciatica, joint pain, repetitive strain. Acupuncture addresses the source of the problem by restoring circulation and reducing inflammation, often providing relief where other approaches have fallen short.
Overall Wellbeing
Some patients come to us managing a specific diagnosis. Others just feel depleted, foggy, or like they’ve lost a version of themselves that used to feel good. If that resonates, we can help with that too.
Why Where You Go Matters
If you’ve been looking for acupuncture care that truly understands women’s health, you’ve probably noticed that finding that level of expertise takes some searching.
At The Oldershaw Clinic, women’s health and reproductive medicine have been our core focus since we opened in 1995. Every one of our practitioners holds ABORM board certification, the highest specialty credential available in reproductive acupuncture, which means we’ve gone well beyond general training to develop advanced knowledge in reproductive endocrinology, fertility protocols, and integrative care. When you’re navigating something as personal as fertility or as life-altering as perimenopause, that kind of depth matters.
We’ve also spent years building relationships with providers across the Bay Area – reproductive endocrinologists, OBs, midwives, therapists – so your care doesn’t exist in a silo. Whether you’re seeing a doctor in Walnut Creek, Berkeley, or Oakland, we’re part of that conversation, not separate from it.
And practically speaking: we’re open seven days a week, including evenings, because we know your life doesn’t pause for healthcare.
What Happens at Your First Visit
Your initial appointment is longer than a typical session, because we spend a real portion of it just listening.
We’ll go through your full health history and ask questions about your cycle, digestion, sleep, stress, energy, and anything else that feels relevant to where you are right now. We want the full picture before we begin.
You’ll leave with actual answers, a clear sense of what to expect, and, most patients tell us, a physical sense of ease that surprises them even after that very first session.
A Few Questions We Hear Often
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people are genuinely surprised by how comfortable it is. The needles are extremely fine, much thinner than a hypodermic needle, and the sensation is usually minimal. Many people feel a subtle warmth or tingling, which are signs that circulation is responding. Most find the whole experience deeply relaxing.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on what you’re treating. Some people notice significant improvement within a few sessions. Others, especially those working through fertility or complex chronic conditions, benefit from a more sustained course of treatment. We’ll talk through realistic expectations at your first visit.
Do you accept insurance?
Many plans cover acupuncture. We provide a detailed receipt (called a superbill) for you to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement.
Where are you located?
We’re at 1331 Grand Ave, Piedmont, CA 94610, on the Piedmont/Oakland border, easily accessible from throughout the East Bay. We are open seven days a week, including evenings.
