Reciprocal IVF Acupuncture

Reciprocal IVF: How Acupuncture Supports Both Partners Through the Process

in Fertility Support, IVF, LGBTQ/by Nicole Gonzales - Oakland Acupuncturist, East Bay Acupuncture

If you and your partner are two women building a family together, reciprocal IVF offers a way for both of you to be part of this pregnancy: one partner’s egg, fertilized with donor sperm, is transferred into the other partner’s womb. Both of you are woven into the biology of the pregnancy. Acupuncture can support each of you at every stage along the way.

It’s also, practically speaking, a more involved fertility journey. Two bodies, two timelines, and a process that asks something of both people, often at the same time.

Acupuncture supports both partners through this process: promoting ovarian response during stimulation, preparing the uterine lining for transfer, and managing stress.

Two Roles, Two Protocols

In reciprocal IVF, the partner providing the egg goes through ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval: injectable hormones, frequent monitoring appointments, and a retrieval procedure.

The receiving partner prepares her uterine lining for the embryo transfer, and her body for pregnancy. There are hormone medications (typically estrogen and progesterone), monitoring appointments, and if all goes well, a pregnancy.

These timelines overlap, and both are physically and emotionally demanding.

How Acupuncture Fits Into Each Timeline

For the egg-providing partner, acupuncture in the 3 months leading up to retrieval focuses on supporting ovarian response and egg health. From a Chinese medicine perspective, we’re nourishing what we call Kidney Jing, the deep constitutional energy most closely associated with reproductive potential and egg quality. We also work on reducing stress and supporting the body through the demands of stimulation medications.

For the gestational partner, acupuncture in the 2-3 months before transfer focuses on building the uterine lining, supporting a receptive uterine environment, and preparing the body for a healthy pregnancy. Many women continue acupuncture throughout their pregnancy.

A Fuller Circle of Care

Acupuncture is one part of how we support you, but it’s rarely the only part. Our approach also includes nutrition, supplement guidance, and coaching on exercise, sleep, and stress management. Depending on where you are in your protocol, your visits will include guidance aimed at supporting egg quality, uterine receptivity, general reproductive health, and overall wellness.

We’ve spent over three decades treating fertility patients across the Bay Area, and our team is board certified in reproductive medicine (FABORM). That means the guidance you receive is grounded in clinical training as well as a great deal of accumulated experience, including the particular logistics of reciprocal IVF.

The Emotional Layer

IVF asks a lot of anyone going through it. There’s the uncertainty of not knowing how your body will respond to medication, the scheduling stress of frequent appointments and bloodwork, and the emotional rollercoaster of waiting for results you can’t control.

We are deeply familiar with the day to day of fertility treatment, and we can help you better navigate the process, from understanding what a stimulation cycle calendar looks like to what you might expect around your transfer date. Think of us as the people you can ask anything: what’s a baseline appointment for, what might my estrogen be at this level, is this side effect normal, what’s likely to happen next week.

We won’t diagnose or override what your fertility doctor tells you, but we can help you understand the process and the context of what is going on. Acupuncture sessions create a natural space for these conversations. You’re not rushing between other appointments, and there’s time to talk through whatever is on your mind that week, however small the question feels.

Coordinating with Your Fertility Clinic

We work closely with fertility clinics in Oakland and throughout the greater Bay Area and are experienced in coordinating acupuncture care with IVF protocols. If you have a treatment calendar, bring it to your first appointment and we’ll build a support plan around your individual timeline.

We’re open seven days a week, which is particularly helpful during IVF cycles for scheduling appointments.

Reciprocal IVF: Common Questions

What is reciprocal IVF?

Reciprocal IVF is a fertility treatment for two women in which one provides the egg and the other carries the pregnancy. One woman undergoes ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval, while the other receives the embryo and carries the pregnancy.

Can acupuncture help with reciprocal IVF?

Yes. Acupuncture can support both partners in a reciprocal IVF cycle, the partner undergoing egg retrieval and the partner preparing for embryo transfer and pregnancy, with treatment tailored to each partner’s role and timeline.

When should I start acupuncture before an IVF cycle?

Many patients begin acupuncture about three months before their relevant procedure, egg retrieval for the providing partner, embryo transfer for the receiving partner, though it’s never too late to start.

Do you coordinate with my existing fertility clinic?

Yes. We coordinate acupuncture care with fertility clinics throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and we can build your treatment plan around your existing IVF protocol and calendar.
