The Chinese Lunar New Year has been celebrated for over 4000 years.  Each year is represented by both an animal and an element.

The Ox is the second animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac.  According to myth, the great emperor determined the order of the animals by throwing a party and seeing who arrived first.  On the way to the party, the animals had to cross a river.  The Ox, who was in front, kindly gave a ride to the rat across the river. As they reached the shore, the rat jumped off and arrived at the party first.
